Join Marianne Smith, Partner, Blakes and John Illingworth, Partner, Mathews Dinsdale for Coffee with Counsel on Thursday, December 7, 2023 from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM as they aim to explain The Supreme Court of Canada's recently released decision in R. v. Greater Sudbury (City), a case which was anticipated to have significant impact for the construction industry and the safety-related duties of “owners” and “employers” on projects across all sectors.
The Court’s split decision raises several questions for stakeholders going forward. This session will aim to explain the Court’s decision, its impact on safety compliance and potential liability, and steps that may be taken to minimize risk.
Marianne Smith has over 20 years of experience as a commercial lawyer, with a significant portion of her practice encompassing public procurement, infrastructure and public-private partnerships.
John Illingworth represents clients on a broad range of labour and employment issues, with a special focus on workers’ compensation, occupational health and safety, and labour relations.
A Zoom meeting link will be sent on December 6.
Be advised that none of the responses should be taken as legal advice and that attendees must satisfy themselves with any information taken away from the session.
